When redecorating your bedroom, make sure to think carefully about your closet. You don’t want it to just look good; it needs to work well for your clothes and your needs. After all, there’s no point in having a beautiful bedroom if it is covered in clothes and shoes because your wardrobe does not do what you need it to.
Here are our tips on creating the ideal bespoke closet.
The first thing you need to do is think carefully about what will go in your wardrobe. Is it just for you or do you share it with a partner? Will you be keeping your shoes, hats and accessories in there too, and do you also want room for linen and extra bedding?
You might even want to fit a mirror on the inside of the door, or have a discrete laundry basket inside one of the drawers.
Once you have determined what you want to keep in your wardrobe, this will make it easier to work out how many rails, shelves, or drawers you will require.
Lots of people dream of having a large walk-in closet out of the movies, but this requires a lot of space. If you are lucky enough to have a spare bedroom, you could transform this into a large walk-in wardrobe with a dressing table and mirrors.
However, you could also create walk-in closets in smaller bedrooms through clever design. For instance, you could create a corridor to the en suite and have your clothes stored on either side of the aisle leading to the doorway. This makes sure your clothes stay out of view of the main room, but enables you to easily see your outfits without having to leave extra space for doors.
You might automatically have created space in your bespoke wardrobe for your dresses, shirts, trousers, tops, and jumpers, but do not forget about storage for your smaller items as well. Underwear, scarves, jewellery, hair accessories and belts all need to be put somewhere so include several drawers or shelves in your design.
It is a good idea to put the smallest things in shallow divided drawers, so you can see each item clearly when you open them, while they also do not take up much room.
Do not just assume you will put shoes on the floor of the cupboard because, over time, it is likely they will end up in a big pile. Instead, fit proper storage for your footwear, from pull-out shelves to display units so you can easily find the right pair.
If you like to collect a lot of shoes, they might end up taking over your closet, in which case, it may be best to find somewhere else in the house to store them.
