Interior design trends change as quickly than fashion ones, with experts constantly predicting what types of furniture, paint, styles and tiles we will all fall in love with over the next few months.
However, even though interior design can date in just a few years, are there some things that are timeless, and will remain as popular as ever?
Just a few years ago, pretty much everyone had subway tiles, feature walls, shabby chic bedrooms, entertainment stations in their lounge, floating staircases, and rustic country kitchens.
We then went through a stage of open shelving, geometric tiles, millennial pink paints, mid-century modern chandeliers, chalkboard walls, wood-burning stoves, and kids’ rooms with a canopy in every corner.
While they were each the pinnacle of contemporary stylish design at the time, most of these trends have dated and been swapped for different ones.
Indeed, according to the Spruce, our focus is now on boho living rooms full of bright colours and textures; bold, colourful kitchens, as opposed to clinical modern ones or faux country ones; bathrooms full of natural materials like limestone; and the re-emergence of formal dining rooms.
“We foresee homeowners spending more time in the dining room and embracing dinner time once again,” the news provider stated.
When it comes to colours, beige will make a return after being shunned in the 2000s, and dark shades will replace neutral ones, as homeowners go bold with their paint choices.
Accessories will be natural materials, such as rattan and wicker, while more people will consider ways to make their homes more environmentally-friendly, from installing solar panels to using low-energy lighting.
Elle Décor also predicts floral wallpaper, layering old with new, dark painted doors, earthy tones, bold bathroom designs, black and white floors, upholstered walls and tapestries, multi-functional spaces, faux marble, and furniture with rounded edges are going to be some of the biggest interior trends of the decade.
Something that will become really popular is ‘grandmillennial’ style, which has been described as “traditional design with a twist”.
Interior expert Ariel Okin told the publication this trend involves “blending elements of classic design like chinoiserie, scallops, natural fibre rugs, topiaries, and more, with a contemporary edge (think: modern art and clean lined furniture)”.
So, with so many interior designs coming in and out of fashion, are there really some that will stand the test of time?
According to House Beautiful, shaker-style cabinetry is one trend that has remained popular for decades and doesn’t appear to be losing momentum.
It stated: “Shaker-style cabinetry is always a reliable and stylish choice in any home, working well in both in traditional and contemporary interiors.”
Another trend that seems to be everlasting is grey-based colour palettes. Even though grey seems to have declined in popularity over the last few years after nearly everyone went out to buy a pot of grey paint, using elements of grey around the home easily works with most aesthetics.
Thanks to the different ones of grey, from cool hues to warmer, darker ones, it can be used for any interior style, from Japandi through to maximalism.
Dark bronze fittings are also timeless, adding an element of history and luxury to a home.
